Dal GECPD un messaggio di Hawa Mohamed
Dear Spazio Solidale,
Greetings. It is always a pleasure hearing from you and touched by your continous concern particularly in the phase of the prevailing global pandemic. The family and I are generally fine except for the health challenges we have to cope with from time to time. Am away in Nairobi but Amina and the team are on ground continuing with program activities. I hope to join them in the coming week.
Saluti. È sempre un piacere sentirvi e soprattutto siamo colpiti dal vostro interesse in particolare nella grave fase di pandemia globale. Io e la mia famiglia stiamo bene, con qualche problema di salute che di tanto in tanto dobbiamo affrontare. Io sono a Nairobi, ma Amina e la squadra sono sul campo e continuano i lavori. Mi auguro di poterli raggiungere la prossima settimana.
The situation in Galkayo is relatively calm. We have not witnessed any major incident lately. People are grappling with the challenge of COVID 19 which has terribly affected livelihoods and household level. We are in the middle of the second wave throughout the region which is providing to be more devastating for us than the first one. Ofcourse we know it cannot not be to the level you people suffered in Italy. We understand the challenge you continue to face and which we know has affected many of your operations. We stand with you and hope that things will be fine sooner than later. However, locally no serious containment measures have been put in place in the second wave. People continue with their business and schools continue to operate after reopening in August. For us it was realized that with relevant health protocols observed, the children are much safer in school than at home. Hence contemplation of closing schools did not surfice. We also continue with our other programs including the adult literacy and vocational skills training through which we have integrated awareness and sensitization on COVID 19. Ofcourse we are not taking anything for granted and are observing all protocols issued by Ministry of Health.
La situazione a Galkayo è calma. Ultimamente non si sono verificati altri incidenti. Le persone combattono la sfida con il covid 19 che ha colpito terribilmente le vite e le famiglie. Siamo nel mezzo della seconda ondata che sembra colpire la nostra regione più della prima. Certo sappiamo che non raggiunge il livello che state vivendo in Italia. Ci rendiamo conto che le difficoltà che dovete affrontare hanno colpito molte vostre attività. Vi siamo vicini con l’augurio che il tutto finisca quanto prima. Per quanto riguarda la vita locale, non sono state messe in atto misure costrittive maggiori. La gente continua a svolgere le proprie attività e le scuole hanno ripreso normalmente una volta riaperte in agosto. Ci siamo resi conto che con i protocolli messi in atto, la salute è più tutelata a scuola che a casa. Per cui non si contempla la chiusura delle scuole. Proseguono anche gli altri programmi compresi istruzione e laboratori per adulti; all’interno di queste attività sono state aggiunte lezioni su sensibilizzazione e presa di coscienza della gravità del COVID 19. Non diamo niente per scontato e osserviamo i protocolli del Ministero della Salute.
It is also worth mentioning that besides the COVID 19, we are still grappling with another catastrophe that is the locust invasion. We have witnessed a resurgence of the invasion over the last 4 months and most vegetation has been destroyed. This is seriously affecting pastoral communities whose pasture for their animals has been destroyed and a few agro farmers whose crop has been destroyed. With focus having shifted to COVID 19 and the forthcoming federal elections, little is being done to address the challenge.
Desidero anche far presente che oltre il COVID 19, dobbiamo affrontare un’altra calamità, cioè l’invasione delle locuste. Negli ultimi 4 mesi abbiamo visto il ritorno dell’invasione e gran parte della vegetazione è andata distrutta. Questo è un grande problema per le comunità dedite alla pastorizia che hanno visto distrutti i pascoli per gli animali e per alcuni agricoltori che hanno visto distrutto il raccolto. Con l’attenzione concentrata sul COVID 19 e le prossime elezioni federali, resta ben poco per altre sfide.
